JET Programme

Why “A Year…”?

Curious to know why the blog is titled “A Year in Japan”? Why only a year?

Well, apart from the obvious lack of creativity that I have when it comes to naming blogs, it also boils down to how the JET Programme works.

You see, the majority of participants on the programme are hired as ALT’s (Assistant Language Teachers), and we sign a one year contract with a contracting organisation (usually the Board of Education (BOE) of the prefecture we are placed in). However, the contract may be renewed up to five years depending on how much the BOE likes you and the amount of entertainment you provide as a crazy foreigner. Well, okay, that’s not entirely true. But, what is important is that there is a chance to renew the contract after one year.

So, even though the blog has the word “year” in it, that does not mean I will be limited to living and working in Japan for just one year. By all accounts, at this point in time I do plan to be there much longer!

P.S. Suggestions for a more creative blog title are graciously welcomed. 😉

  1. I like the name, simple, clean, understated. A very exciting adventure is ahead of you. Good luck and I can’t wait to read all about it!
